To Create an Environment Conducive for Impactful and Meaningful Health Scholarship that Contributes to Life-long Health
Objective 1: Expand the College’s Research Productivity
- Provide a definition of research productivity – use alt metrics?
- Align national, regional, and local funding initiatives with the expertise of existing and future faculty
- Identify the universities strategic priorities (i.e. CID, BRC, Computer Science, etc.) and develop ways that health sciences can become a part of these investments
Objective 2: Assure Synchrony Between the College’s Research and Teaching Agendas with Service Commitments for Research-active Faculty
- Incorporate strength-based workload distribution when developing faculty workloads
- Inform the Office of Research on strength-based workload distributions so that strategic priorities are aligned with faculty expectations
- Balance service efforts with faculty research agendas
Objective 3: Increase Collaborative Research Across College’s and Universities to Support the Interprofessional Education Agenda Through Research
- Provide a baseline by identifying collaborative research across colleges and universities
- Encourage COHS faculty to serve as Chairs of thesis/doctoral committees outside of the college such that it furthers their research agenda
Actionable strategies to help the College move closer to its Research Strategic Goal
- Require each T/TT faculty, through a formalized meeting, to review, refine, and document their research agenda with their supervisor or assigned mentor on an annual basis.
- Better align workloads (teaching, research, and service) with a faculty member’s research agenda – service efforts should be strategically targeted to further the research agenda (i.e. participation on research proposal review panels and targeting special interest groups and national conferences that provide networking and growth in one’s areas of research).
- Provide the COHS Office of Research with access to T/TT faculty workloads so that the office can better align calls for funding with the disciplinary expertise
- Identify research gaps on both an institutional and national level to better align COHS research strengths with these gaps – this also has the potential to better inform future faculty hires in the college.Actionable Item: Strategic planning exercise performed in fall 2017 – this exercise will follow a model developed out of the VPR’s office. Dr. Stephenson and a representative from the VPR’s office will facilitate this exercise
- Enhance graduate programming in COHS by having more students write a thesis as a requirement of graduation.
- Better align expectations for P&T with the COHS workload expectations for research/scholarship – “on average, the publication of one peer-reviewed publication per year”. There is concern that merely meeting the workload requirement will not be adequate when faculty go up for P&T.
- New faculty hires must have a reduced teaching workload for a period of time so that they can build up a research agenda – this reduction in load should occur even if teaching buyout monies do not exist).
- A planning exercise with the research goal team will be held during the first meeting in fall 2017 whose outcome will be to provide a clear, measurable definition of “research productivity” for COHS.
- Department and College P&T committees should recognize other forms of scholarship placed in a faculty candidate’s portfolio (i.e. proposal submissions, technical reports, creative endeavors…).
- An expanded research/scholarship working group should be created to ensure that research/scholarship efforts in COHS continue to be aligned with the college strategic plan.
- Through implementation of a formal survey mechanism, perceived and real barriers to the performance of research/scholarship should be gauged – this should be done in fall 2017.
