Health education specialists help individuals and communities live, work and play in healthier ways.

Health education specialists work for voluntary health agencies, local and state health departments, public/community agencies, health care agencies, work-sites, university health centers, and public schools (if a licensed teacher). Our graduates work in a wide variety of employment settings. Our graduates are eligible to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam and we have a great pass rate. Check out these reasons why employers hire graduates with the CHES  certification.

This short video, created by Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) provides a good overview of the types of jobs health education specialists perform.

What is a health education and promotion?

Health education and promotion is concerned with enabling the development of life-skills, self-concept, and social skills through a broad range of political, legislative, fiscal, environmental, and administrative means. We work to create supportive environments because they will have the greatest impact in producing lasting positive health behavior change.

The BS in Public Health with an emphasis in Health Education and Promotion (HEP) degree is designed to prepare students for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) examination through the experiential development of professional skills and competencies.

  • The BS in Public Health and select the Health Education and Promotion emphasis started FA 16 and we are updating the degree. The new requirements will start in Fall 2018.  We are excited to be in the CEPH accreditation process for standalone baccalaureate programs.
  • It is important for you to meet with your advisor every semester so you can better plan for your career and stay updated on any class changes. We have some flexibility with classes and Dr. Spear wants you to graduate in a timely manner.
