The new BS in Public Health started Fall 2016 and interested students (current & new) are encouraged to determine what degree to complete. If you are interested in the BS in Public Health and want the Health Education and Promotion emphasis, please contact Dr. Spear.
All students enrolled in the BS in HEP degree must graduate by Spring 2019. If you want to change from HEP to the BS in Public Health degree, follow the directions on the Catalog Year Update Form and change your year to 2016-2017 and submit the form to the Registrar’s Office. Once your catalog year has been change then use the Change My Major function and select the Public Health major and the Health Education and Promotion emphasis.
Health education specialists help individuals and communities live, work and play in healthier ways.
Health education specialists work for voluntary health agencies, local and state health departments, public/community agencies, health care agencies, work-sites, university health centers, and public schools (if a licensed teacher). Our graduates work in a wide variety of employment settings. Our graduates are eligible to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam and we have a great pass rate. What is a health education and promotion?
Health education and promotion is concerned with enabling the development of life-skills, self-concept, and social skills through a broad range of political, legislative, fiscal, environmental, and administrative means. We work to create supportive environments because they will have the greatest impact in producing lasting positive health behavior change.
The BS in Public Health with an emphasis in Health Education and Promotion (HEP) degree is designed to prepare students for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) examination through the experiential development of professional skills and competencies.
- The BS in Public Health and select the Health Education and Promotion emphasis started FA 16 and we are updating the degree. The new requirements will start in Fall 2018. We are excited to be in the CEPH accreditation process for standalone baccalaureate programs.
- It is important for you to meet with your advisor every semester so you can better plan for your career and stay updated on any class changes. We have some flexibility with classes and Dr. Spear wants you to graduate in a timely manner.
