Preparing for an Advising Appointment

How to Experience a Good Advising Session

The responsibility to establish an advising relationship rests with you! Plan to meet with your academic advisor on a regular basis and share the following information:

  • Academic and personal accomplishments prior to college entry (high school GPA, academic awards, school and community activities).
  • The degree to which your expectations of college are being met/not met and why.
  • The major goals you hope to accomplish the first year and beyond.
  • Special circumstances needing consideration in your academic and career goals (learning limitations, personal challenges, having to work for income, raising children).
  • Career exploration and planning issues-interests, abilities, and circumstances.
  • Groups and organizations you want to join and the skills you hope to gain from participation.
  • Career-related opportunities you would like to experience – internships, work, or volunteer.
  • Arrive on time for your appointment.
  • If you can’t make your appointment, call.
  • Bring all materials (e.g. transcripts, Degree Progress Report, AP scores, etc.)
  • Come prepared with questions.

Below are areas that our office can assist you with during your advising appointment and the suggested preparation options prior to scheduling/attending your appointment.  Click on the title of an area to display resources related to that area.

Questions and Specific Program Information

Major Exploration

  • Review Undergraduate Catalog for a summary of degree programs.
  • Use Resources for programs of interest (i.e. Occupational Handbook, Exploring Health Careers, etc.)

Transfer Credit Questions

Broncoventure Orientation

  • Assist in first semester registration during orientation.
  • Questions about Broncoventure Orientation please see New Student Programs.

New Student Required Advising

  • A hold will be placed on your account to stop you from registering your second semester, you must see an advisor to have this hold removed.
  • RSVP to one of the email invitations forthcoming in your Broncomail account after the tenth day of the semester.


  • Continuing Student Registration begins late October: Fall, mid February: Summer, late March: Spring.
  • Signup for an advising appointment using your email invitation received in your Broncomail account or call our office for more information.

Plan Design

  • Semester-by-semester planning
  • Finish in Four Guarantee Program Review policies on this program before scheduling an advising appointment for eligibility requirement.
  • ROTC Four Year Plans Meet with ROTC staff for documents to be provided to advisors at advising appointment.


  • Specific coordination of internships will be determined on an individual basis.

Program/Professional School Application Assistance

  • Information on Entrance Exam preparation (MCAT, GRE, etc.)
  • Information on Centralized Application Services (i.e. AMCAS, PTCAS, etc.)
  • Information on Letter of Intent, Personal Statements.
  • Information on Letter of Recommendations (i.e. letter requests, letter submissions, etc.)

Graduate School Preparation

  • Master degree programs(i.e. Business Administration, Health Care Administration, Health Sciences, Public Health, Nursing, etc).

Financial Aid Appeals
