Wretha Durst Memorial Nursing Scholarship

Wretha Durst

Wretha Elizabeth Stevens Durst was born in 1922 in Hartford, Kansas. As a depression‐era farm girl, she quickly learned the meaning of hard work, sacrifice, life of simple pleasures and caring for one’s family and neighbors. She carried these early childhood principles with her throughout her life. Wretha never had wealth that could be counted, but her treasure chest was, nonetheless, overflowing. Her riches were measured by the hundreds of people – young and old – for whom she showed compassion. Wretha was a nurse’s aid at the V.A. Hospital in the early 1940’s, before her marriage to Harry Durst. When she was widowed in 1962, at age 38 (and with five children), Wretha returned to her life’s calling. She learned to drive a car and was hired to work in Labor and Delivery at St. Alphonsus Hospital from the early 1960’s to the mid‐1970’s. Wretha aspired to take her career further, by becoming an LPN, but financial circumstances prevented her from achieving that dream. It is her family’s fondest hope that with this scholarship, many nurses will attain their dreams and embody Wretha’s legacy of kindness, caring and compassion for all.
