- Taught high school chemistry and AP Chemistry in Tacoma, WA for 13 years. Coached football, girls basketball, and baseball in high school and was a college baseball coach at Pacific Lutheran University for four years as well.
- Taught at Idaho State University for 13 years in the areas of public health program evaluation, biostatistics, epidemiology, and community program planning. Chair of Dept of Health and Nutrition Sciences for ten years.
- Currently, dean and professor in the College of Health Sciences at Boise State University. Teach or have taught courses in epidemiology, biostatistics, community program evaluation, health science inquiry, health program planning, issues in health policy, and health policy and ethics.
Scholarship
- Headed the data collection and policy option research teams for the State Planning Grant—we studied approaches to covering Idaho’s uninsured and looked at factors that made people uninsured in Idaho-- through the Center for Health Policy which is housed at Boise State University.
- Have published 27 journal articles mainly on health program evaluation and HIV/AIDS education; received over $3 million dollars in sponsored research, written numerous technical reports, given dozens of professional presentations, and co-authored one textbook and two text chapters.
Community Engagement

During the years of 2005-2007, my wife and I lived as faculty-in-residence in Morrison Hall on the campus of Boise State University. We served as faculty mentors and instructors for students in the Health Professions Residential College. Of course, we remain avid Bronco supporters!
Active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Boise.
Personal
Married 39 plus years to wife, Georgia. We have two grown children, Jennifer (lives in Boise with husband, Erik, and our new grand-daughter, Rose) and Erik (lives in Minneapolis with his wife, Becky and our grandson, Jonah). Yes, we have two Eriks.
