What are the MHS Program graduation requirements?  

Form a Supervisory Committee

Once admitted with Regular status to the Master of Health Science Program a supervisory committee should be formed.

The supervisory committee will work with the student to establish a program of study, direct the thesis or project or develop a case study, and administer the comprehensive examinations.

Supervisory Committee Membership

·        The committee is comprised of a minimum of three graduate faculty members.

·        The student’s advisor will serve as chair of the committee.  The advisor must be a member of the graduate faculty from the College of Health Sciences.

·        The second member of the committee must hold full or associate graduate faculty status at Boise State University.

·        The third member may hold full, associate or adjunct graduate faculty status at Boise State University. 

·        All committee members must qualify for and be appointed to the Graduate Faculty.

Complete Required Core, Culminating Activities and Emphasis Area Course Work

The curriculum (36 - 39 credits) is comprised of core courses (15 credits), culminating activity requirements (9 - 12 credits) and, emphasis area courses (12 – 15 credits).

Apply for Candidacy

Master’s level students should apply for candidacy as soon as possible after completing 18 credits of graduate work.   To document your candidacy for a graduate degree you must complete an Application to Candidacy form (PDF) and submit it to your Supervisory Committee for approval.

Complete MHS Program Culminating Activities

Culminating activities serve as the capstone to the graduate student’s program of study.  Hence, they should demonstrate the student’s ability to synthesize academic and other preparatory work and signal the student’s readiness to work independently.

The program requires the completion of a capstone assessment course (MHLTHSCI 600) and either a thesis or project or additional course work. :

  Assessment Course (capstone)
This course serves as the final comprehensive assessment of student knowledge and abilities related to program competencies and must be taken during the final semester of the student's graduate program.

A thesis or project option
Once a student has completed 18 credit hours of required graduate course work, he/she are eligible to begin working on a thesis or project

Additional Course (non-thesis/non-project) work option
A student can elect to take additional elective courses in lieu of completing a thesis or project.

Apply for Graduation

At the beginning of the semester a student is planning to graduate he/she must complete and submit an Application for Graduation to the Graduate College.  The form and instructions are available at http://www.boisestate.edu/gradcoll/

Scheduling of Comp. Examination

Exam must be scheduled with your advisor by the end of the 5th week of the semester

Completion of Comp. Examination

Must be completed by the end of the 8th week of the semester (10th week in spring semester)

Thesis or Project Defense

Must be completed by the end of the 9th week of the semester (12th week in spring semester)

Thesis or Project Submission

Must be submitted to Graduate College for review by the end of the 12th week of the semester (13th week in spring)
